Outdoor play is not just a source of fun for children it is an important component of sensory
development and integration. Natural environments play a vital role in supporting children’s
sensory processing, enhancing motor skills, and promoting overall wellbeing. Sensory
integration refers to the brain’s ability to process and respond appropriately to sensory input from
the environment. Outdoor settings, with their different textures, sounds and movements provide
meaningful opportunities for children to engage multiple senses simultaneously.
For example walking barefoot on grass stimulates tactile and proprioceptive senses while
climbing on playground structures or tree branches promotes vestibular input and balance.
Playing in sand or water allows children to explore different textures, enhancing tactile
discrimination and fine motor control. Even simple activities, such as catching leaves in the wind
or listening to birdsong, support auditory processing and visual tracking skills. These experiences
help children regulate emotions, improve attention and develop coordination which can
positively impact learning and daily activities.
Parents can intentionally add sensory rich elements to outdoor play activities by planning
activities that include challenges to balance, coordination and touch. Nature walks, obstacle
courses provide structured yet flexible opportunities for exploration. Encouraging children to do
repeated movements, such as swinging, jumping, and digging can assist them in reaching their
goal of sensory regulation and feelings of calm. Importantly, outdoor play allows children to
experience safe risks promoting confidence and a sense of problem solving skills.
In occupational therapy, we emphasize the importance of outdoor play for supporting children’s
sensory, motor, and emotional development. Incorporating nature-based activities into daily
routines is a practical, enjoyable and evidence informed strategy to support sensory integration.
By observing how your child interacts with natural environments and providing varied sensory
experiences parents can help their children develop essential motor, cognitive and emotional
skills that will benefit them throughout life.
