Edward’s Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18, is a rare and serious genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra (third) copy of chromosome 18 in the body’s cells. This extra genetic material disrupts normal growth and development, resulting in widespread congenital malformations, especially affecting internal organs, physical development, and neurological function. The condition is a complex malformation syndrome that has profound effects on multiple body systems.
The syndrome can present in three main forms: full trisomy 18 (where every cell has the extra chromosome), mosaic trisomy 18 (where only some cells carry the extra chromosome), and partial trisomy 18 (where only part of the chromosome is triplicated). Full trisomy is the most common and severe form, while mosaic and partial forms may vary in severity depending on the number of affected cells or which parts of the chromosome are duplicated.
Infants with Edward’s Syndrome often show distinct physical and developmental features. These may include low birth weight, small head size, abnormal facial features, clenched fists with overlapping fingers, rocker-bottom feet, and a range of organ defects such as congenital heart malformations and kidney anomalies. These abnormalities contribute to significant challenges with feeding, breathing, heart function, and overall growth.
Diagnosis of Trisomy 18 can occur before birth through prenatal screening and diagnostic tests such as ultrasound, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), amniocentesis, or chorionic villus sampling. After birth, diagnosis is confirmed through chromosomal analysis, which identifies the extra chromosome 18. Early detection can help families and medical teams prepare for the complex care needs of the affected infant.
The prognosis for Edward’s Syndrome is generally poor. Many pregnancies with this condition end in miscarriage or stillbirth, and most infants who are born alive do not survive beyond the first year of life due to the severity of their medical issues. A small percentage survive longer, but usually with profound cognitive and physical impairments. Treatment focuses on supportive and palliative care tailored to the child’s specific health needs, as there is currently no cure for the syndrome.

I have had a wonderful experience with Rehab Care. Dr. Samia has treated my leg pain, arms pain & hand/thumb pain as well as severe weakness in the body. I visited her while i was on holiday in Pakistan & then took online consultations from her in the uk. Her diagnosis was quick and accurate with an exceptional treatment plan. My family goes to Dr. Samia because we trust her treatment a lot. I have recommended Dr. Samia to all my friends in the UK. Dr. Samia also made my healthy diet plan making me recover much faster.
